Manor Green School is a SEN school in Maidenhead which has students age 2-19 and with a variety of support needs. The below case study is from a specific class or lesson.
For students to use the Exercise program, to have a game/ competition. Students to choose a peer to have a turn after their turn. Staff to keep a log of scores and to celebrate improvements each week.
As a whole class activity to increase physical participation in joint activities. The session was for 20 minutes every Friday afternoon for a term. The students and staff took turns to play the Exercise game where the cosmoids where placed around the table and the students had to find and press the coloured switch. Student would then celebrate their score and choose someone to have a turn after them. The students would finish the session with a whole class showdown game. The class would split into 2 groups and pick a colour each to press and then have a little heathy competition to find their colour in the time.
The students showed progress each week beating their previous score. The students also started to show some team building skills such as cheering on a peers and celebrating others success. One student as engaged highly in the activity, for a longer period of time, than seen in other sessions. This student also took responsibility for returning the Cosmo to the charging area in the staff room at the end of the day. This student can find transitioning to areas of the school difficult.
Allowing the time for the students to understand the expectations of the games.
Having the cosmoids spaced around just one large group table worked best for our class rather than around the whole room, as this was too big or a space to scan for the colours. Having the adults take turns to helped with modeling the skills, expectations and language used during the activity. Showdown was a good finished activity for our class as it brought everyone back together and worked on some team skills as well as individual turn taking skills.
