Manor Green School is a SEN school in Maidenhead which has students age 2-19 and with a variety of support needs. The below case study is from a specific class or lesson.
Overall, the cosmo’s were a great way to take a simple activity and turn it into something far more interactive and engaging for the entire class. The sounds of the story and the lights of the buttons meant that a more sensory aspect was added which really increased levels of focus. At the same time, students were able to work on turn taking, listening and motor skills all at the same time within a quick and easy to set up activity.
Flynn (the session leader) used Cosmo to facilitate a turn-taking group story activity with his class, all of whom are on the autistic spectrum. Motor skills were also worked on when pressing the button.
Cosmo buttons shared out to each student, students to wait until their turn to press their own button. (turn taking, focus and motor skills)
Students were excited to press their own cosmoid and also to hear the sounds from their peers buttons.
Initially the biggest challenge was getting each student to wait for their turn to play. But going around the circle and sharing the sounds with each student meant that students were interested in the story and sound rather than just pressing the cosmoid.
Use of the cosmo’s increased student engagement and made the story more interactive. Because they were enjoying the sounds of each page, this meant that they were more focused in anticipation of the next sound as the story progressed.
